Abdías Murillo
This week special is dedicated to Abdías Murillo, another young promise of El Salvador design/style scene. When I met Abdías, he started as a consumer, he was attending to all the fashion events in the country, his love for fashion was reflected on the way he dressed, on his impeccable hairstyle, and also on the way he contributed to style some photo shoots.
He decided then to give himself an opportunity as a fashion designer, and in 2012 he presented his first collection titled SHIELD, where he showcased his vision of futuristic gladiators, almost taken off a sci fi movie, the usage of textures and the way he played interpreting each piece was the formula for a successful collection. Some of the pieces were really wearable, while some others were perfect for an editorial spread or just as a collector pieces, because after all the theme of this show was to showcase avant garde. I personally enjoyed the color scheme he used, and also his futuristic vision of this world full of "Avant Gladiators" as he call them, fighting against each other.
After this success, he envisioned to do something that in El Salvador most of the people did not know about, a fashion film. Probably many of you have heard about them, those editorials taken into a film such as the Lady Dior ones. This was simply titled as SHIELD, this was his way to showcase his collection in the way he imagined this world of gladiators fighting in the future while he was creating his collection. The result is a really interesting film where you can see the theme of his collection but above all to see the clothes in such detail that is really impressive the way he mixed these to components: Tell a story-Sell clothes.
While we were still digesting all this information, he was ready to showcase his new collection, this was going to be presented at KLDSCP 2013. The inspiration was a picture from Toño Salazar who also was inspired by the dancer Jean Börlin, he interpreted his vision of this dancer and the mood of the 40s, his soundtrack also was inspired by the swing music of those years. His big success on this collection were his blazers made full in organza and his mix of prints.
There was a time for another fashion film and he decided to create Morphes Mentale, this film is even more surreal than his previous one, here you can feel a different state of mind, you can get into the film and you can feel you are part of the story that is being told. Again, even when the story was the central part of the film, we can appreciate details of his clothes, and you can see how his collection can be worn in a real world.
His brand new collection, named "Misceláneo" was presented at the most recent SVFW edition, while on his first collection he decided to go monochromatic and in his second collection he went vintage reinterpreted, in this collection he decided to create a boom of colors, textures, and throw literally a party of references. Normally the first rule when creating a collection is the cohesion, and even though there were a lot of things going on, he managed to create a cohesive collection within all that chaos, when you see the collection in full you can see how some pieces are connected to others and at the end you can recognize each piece as part of the collection.
And this is my personal review on the collection Abdías has presented, I am expecting his next collection and I am really curious to see how he will surprise us. I think his clothes are really good as editorial material and also they are for real customers, customers who dare to dress different. Let's see how he will be doing in the next months and stay tuned for my next review...
